Obituary: George William Edelen Sr., 86, Loretto

George William Edelen Sr., 86, of Loretto, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 2015, at his home. He was born Nov. 10, 1929, in Washington County. He was a lifelong farmer and member of St. Rose Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Geraldine Edelen; one daughter, Angela Cissell; one stepson, Joseph Harold Hamilton; one sister, Louise Medley; and two grandchildren, Toby Edelen and Tammy Edelen.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Louise Edelen; four daughters, Wanda Spalding (Danny) of Springfield, Patty Holt (Mark) of Bloomfield, Linda Cissell (Johnny) of Loretto and Lee Ann Roberts (Eddie) of Holy Cross; eight sons, Billie Edelen (Patty), Dennis Edelen, Eddie Edelen, Keith Edelen (Debbie), Doug Edelen (Pat), Tony Edelen (Lisa) and Greg Edelen (Renee), all of Loretto and Ralph Edelen (Patsy) of Cox’s Creek; six stepdaughters, Gale Bhattacharyya (D.B.), Phyllis Kroggel (Jerry) and Donna Miles (David), all of Lexington, Linda Thompson (Donnie) of Fischerville, and Dorris Thompson (Wally) and Jane Reynolds (Robbie), both of Bardstown; one stepson, Sam Hamilton of Loretto; two brothers, Paul Edelen of Loretto and T.F. Edelen of Louisville; 39 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and a number of stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

The Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2015, at St. Rose Catholic Church, 868 Loretto Road, Springfield with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Kevin McGrath will officiate.

Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015, at Mattingly Funeral Home, 195 Holy Cross Rd. in Loretto with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

His sons will serve as pallbearers and his grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The Mattingly Funeral Home in Loretto is in charge of the arrangements.
