Obituary: Gilbert Leon Milburn, 77, Bardstown

Gilbert Leon Milburn, 77, of Bardstown, formerly of Springfield, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2015, at his home. He was born April 4, 1938, in Springfield to the late William Haldeen and Gertrude Pendygraph Logue Milburn.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Emma Paige Milburn on July 10, 1984; one son, Gilbert Brady Milburn on June 10, 2015; one sister, Mary Lou Harmon; and four brothers, Morris Milburn, H.T. Milburn, Garnett Milburn, and Bill Milburn.

He taught school in Washington County, Harrodsburg, Boston School (1965-66); New Haven School (1966-67) and was served as principal of New Haven School (1969-70). He resigned in July 1971 and accepted a position as curriculum supervisor of Washington County Schools from 1971-75.

He returned to Bardstown and became director of a math program for one year. He then was named principal of Bardstown Transitional School, which later became Bardstown Middle School. He was there until he retired in July 1992. After retirement, he taught at St. Catharine College for three years.

He was a member of Parkway Baptist Church, where he served as an adult Sunday School teacher until his illness.

He was an illustrator for Sarah B. Smith’s books about Nelson County. Art was his hobby and quite often a source of income. He painted a mural on the baptistery wall at Bardstown Church of God. He illustrated the Historic Bardstown Color Mobile coloring book for children. He wrote and illustrated “The Pride of Washington” for the children of Washington County. He drew five drawings of Lancaster landmarks that deserve to be preserved. He drew five pictures of important landmarks of Springfield that were arranged in the Springfield Sampler.

He enjoyed working in the 4-H program and volunteered for years as a judge of the talent and art shows in Nelson and Washington County.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nancy Brady Milburn; two daughters, Susan (Patrick) Puckett and Carolyn (Jason) Schepker, both of Bardstown; one daughter-in-law, Dee Ann Milburn of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two sisters, Nellie (Ben) Haydon of Bardstown, and Iona Williams of Clarksville, Tenn.; his twin brother, Delbert Milburn of Springfield; three grandsons, Nathan Thomas Puckett, Michael Andrew Puckett, and Gabriel Paul Schepker all of Bardstown; and several nieces and nephews.

Th funeral is 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3, 2015, at Parkway Baptist Church with burial in the Bardstown Cemetery with Dr. James Carroll and the Rev. Eddie Benton officiating.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, 2015, and 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Sunday at Barlow Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may go to Kosair Children’s Hospital, Gideon’s International, Alzheimer’s Association or the American Cancer Society.
