Monday, Jan. 4, 2015, 12:01 p.m. — In even-numbered years, your General Assembly convenes the first Tuesday after the first Monday in January and runs for 60 legislative days. As in past years, I’ll take Saturdays to bring you up to date and answer questions at various locations throughout the 50th legislative district. Our district is only Nelson County because the last census showed that our county held almost exactly one-hundredth of Kentucky’s population, and there are 100 state representatives.

The first “Coffee with Dave” is 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16 at Tom Pig’s, 622 Bloomfield Road. The schedule this year is every other Saturday, for two reasons: first, Sen. Jimmy Higdon wants to attend every one of them, and that’s not easy when his senate district includes five counties; and second, because over the years, as people have grown comfortable with routine access, attendance has dropped at several of the venues. So while those locations have been dropped, we cover the county pretty well geographically. If I get some phone calls, I might add Boston but it will probably just be me. And since one of my favorite places is Culvertown, I’ll probably go there too, just not sure when.

Remember, no speeches; we just gather to chat about certain bills or issues that concern you. It’s very informal, and one great advantage is that we have time to fully explore an issue. I buy the coffee, and Jimmy and I look forward to seeing you there.

Jan. 16 Tom Pig’s
Jan. 30 High Grove Grocery
Feb. 13 New Haven Library
Feb. 27 Bloomfield Library
March 13 Rooster Run General Store

Every even-year session is a budget session. Again, we face many challenges. I have good confidence that we will reach agreement between chambers and pass a budget on time; of course, no one is ever completely happy with a budget, and compromise will be necessary to get our work done on time.

The best part of my job is hearing from you. Call me at home, or dial toll-free to the Capitol message line at 800-372-7181.
