Obituary: Nathan Lee Ballard Sr, 81, Bardstown

NATHAN LEE BALLARD

Nathan Lee Ballard Sr, 81, of Bardstown, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016, at his residence. He was born July 9, 1934 in Marion County to the late Nathan James and Mary Alice Ball Ballard. He retired as a foreman for Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation after 35 years. After retirement he helped build homes with his brother and won hundreds of awards in local and state fairs for his culinary talents. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and had a love for gardening, canning and being a farmer. He was a member of Parkway Baptist Church where he worked with missions and hospitality.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Carolyn Coomes Ballard; two sons, Roger Kevin Ballard and Patrick Timothy Ballard; two sisters, Virginia Wimpsett and Barbara B. Brown; one brother, Donnie Ballard; and one great-grandson, Kevin Conklin.

He is survived by two daughters, Dale Marie Ballard of Bardstown and Brenda Leigh (Jon) Taylor of Elizabethtown; three sons, Nathan Lee (Lucille) Ballard Jr. of Berry, Dana Andrew (Jenni) Ballard of Independence and Joseph Brian (Debbie) Ballard of Wilder; one a sister, Mary Elaine (Joe) Dickerson of Bardstown; six brothers, Till (Betty) Ballard, Jack (Martha Rae) Ballard, Billy (Wanda) Ballard, Steve (Pat) Ballard, Jody (Nora) Ballard and Tommy(Lois) Ballard, all of Bardstown; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral is 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 15, 2016, at Parkway Baptist Church with burial at St. Gregory Cemetery with Dr. James Carroll and Bro. Eddie Benton officiating.

Visitation is 1-8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, 2016, at the Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home and 9-11 a.m. Monday at the church.

The family requests memorial contributions go the local Hospice chapter of Nelson County.

The Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
