CHARLES T. POYNTER

At about 6 p.m., Officer Tom Blair of the Bardstown Police saw a black 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe with heavy front-end damage and a flat tire turn from Bloomfield Road onto John Rowan Blvd. Sparks were coming off the wheel rim.

Blair stopped the SUV and noted the its operator, Charles T. Poynter, 32, of Bardstown, smelled of alcohol. While Blair was investigating, he was approached by passing motorists who said the SUV had just been involved in a collision with several vehicles.

At the time, Nelson County Dispatch had just dispatched Nelson County EMS, city police and fire units to the scene of that incident. Police determined Poynter was operating the vehicle when it struck the other vehicles. One person was injured and transported to Flaget Memorial Hospital.

Poynter was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs/etc.; leaving the scene of an accident; no operators license; and failure to wear a seatbelt. He was lodged in the Nelson County Jail.

The investigation is continuing, and police ask anyone with additional information to contact Bardstown Police (502) 348-6811 or Nelson County Dispatch (502) 348-3211.
