Floyd: The Big Lie – ‘Compassionate Pro-Life Democrats’

50th State Representative

Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2015, 10:01 a.m. — On Thursday, Feb. 11, Governor Matt Bevin held a signing ceremony for the first bill that passed this year’s General Assembly: SB 4, which clarifies the law regarding face-to-face consultation between patient and surgeon, commonly known as “informed consent.” The ceremonial signing was in the Capitol Rotunda at the annual statewide “Rally for Life.” The crowd celebrated victory in a battle that had been waged for decades.

A small but powerful contingent in the House has successfully blocked “informed consent” and other pro-life bills since before the time I have been serving you. They call themselves “Compassionate Pro-Life Democrats” but they are quite the opposite; they include the term “pro-life” to deceive you. As I related to you last week, these people were overwhelmingly defeated (92-3) on the House floor with SB 4. (Some members of that group voted in favor of SB 4 on that day, because of the folks back home – more on that later.)

Over the years, as pro-life bills were aborted in the House Health & Welfare Committee, I watched in committee the faces of these “Compassionate Pro-Life Democrats” as the bills were discussed. On those days I sat facing them while giving testimony on my bill or the bills of other sponsors.

Two faces I remember twisted in controlled rage as each of these “Compassionate Pro-Life Democrats” decried “interference in a doctor-patient relationship” (despite the fact that the bill insists on a doctor-patient relationship.) Others asserted that the pre-born child is merely a “mass of tissue” (despite the fact that science has so advanced to show that we are looking at two human beings.) Still others rarely spoke during committee meetings; they just voted no so that the bills would die there. (These were members who voted “yes” to SB 4 on the House floor.)

“Informed consent” legislation was necessary because two decades ago the law required a doctor to inform her patient of several considerations regarding the abortion surgery she was about to undergo. (This is a requirement for all other surgeries performed in Kentucky.) A reasonable person would believe that a doctor should be talking directly with her patient; but the abortion industry saw a loophole and a court agreed that, yes, the patient could listen to a recording instead of having to meet with her doctor. So the abortion consultation became like the software “Terms and Conditions” we all agree to but never read. Legislators have been trying to clarify the intent of the law ever since then. That finally happened last week with SB 4.

Those who call themselves “Compassionate Pro-Life Democrats” have always ridiculed pro-lifers for inserting religion into abortion while ignoring science. But science has advanced so marvelously that a child’s first portrait – often on the wall in their home – is a copy of the first ultrasound that Mom & Dad saw of her. Because of science, it’s now obvious how depraved the abortion industry can be; “Compassionate Pro-Life Democrats” distract you from scientific evidence that proves the humanity of a child who is not yet born. They now even have their own religious group, the “Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice.”

The reaction to SB 4’s passage from a furious Kentucky legislator (one of only three who voted against informed consent and a self-described “Compassionate Pro-Life Democrat”) was to introduce a bill that would require, among other things, permission from a wife for a husband to be prescribed Viagra. “[Those guys] are all awash in Christian family values,” she said. “I want to protect these men from themselves.” At least her mindset is consistent. She thinks of abortion as a sexual matter. The unborn child is not a consideration.

People can disagree with one another. I have very dear friends who are pro-choice, but they don’t lie to me about it. So why would pro-choice politicians deceive you? Because they want people to see the words “Pro-Life” on their post card and maybe vote for them.
If you are in any true sense pro-life, and a candidate appears before you claiming to be a “Compassionate Pro-Life Democrat,” my advice is to run in the other direction as fast as you can. They are deceivers. And that’s the polite term.
