Obituary: Joseph L. ‘Sonny’ Greenwell Jr., 72, New Haven

Joseph L. “Sonny” Greenwell Jr., 72, of New Haven, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 2016, at his home. He was the owner of Joseph L. Greenwell Funeral Home in New Haven and former co-owner of Greenwell-Houghlin Funeral Home in Bardstown.

He was a member of both National Funeral Directors Association and Kentucky Funeral Directors Association. He served Nelson County from 1975 until 2007 as both deputy coroner and Nelson county coroner. He was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church, where he served on St. Catherine Parish Council. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1290, the New Haven Optimist Club, and was a Kentucky Colonel. He also served on the Flaget Hospital Board for six years, the Nelson County Recreation Board, and Riverview Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Julia Ann “Judy” Cambron Greenwell; two sons, Richard L. and Joseph L. Greenwell III; his parents, Joseph L. and Cecilia Spalding Greenwell Sr.; and one grandson, Jeremy Greenwell.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Sweeney Greenwell; one daughter, Patricia Ann Bartley; two sons, Martin W. Greenwell and Sylvester M Greenwell; three stepsons, Chris (Dana) Sweeney, Boyd (Barby) Sweeney and Joey (Stephanie) Sweeney; three sisters, Diane Smith (Larry), Patricia Roehm (Ronnie), and Janice Chesser; one brother, the Rev. Michael Greenwell, O.C., of San Francisco; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The Funeral Mass is 10 a.m. Saturday, March 5, 2016, at St. Catherine Catholic Church with burial in the St. Ann Church Cemetery in Howardstown.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Friday at the Joseph L. Greenwell Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may go to St. Ann’s Cemetery or St. Ann’s Catholic School.
