Tuesday, March 1, 2016, 11 p.m. (Edited to correct tire amnesty program date) — Landfill manager Brad Spalding told Nelson Fiscal Court Tuesday morning that the annual bulky item pickup in now underway.
The six-week program allows county residents to set out for removal large and bulky items that are too large for normal garbage collection. On Monday, collection began on the northeastern portion of Nelson County, including areas west of Louisville Road to the county line, and west of Loretto Road south of Bardstown to the county line.
If residents miss their pickup times, Spalding said they can bring those items to the landfill at no charge any time during the six-week pickup schedule.
No construction debris will be collected during the pickup schedule.
TIRE AMNESTY. The court also approved the county’s participation in a state-funded tire amnesty program beginning Thursday, April 28 through Saturday, April 30. The program is aimed at individuals or businesses that have a large number of tire needing disposal. The tires can be brought to the Nelson County Fairgrounds during those days.
For those who have a large number of tires, Spalding asks that you call ahead to make arrangements. Tires can also be brought to the Nelson County Landfill. Call Spalding at (502) 348-1876 for more information. Tire businesses who collect a disposal fee are not permitted to participate in the program.
CAUCUS QUESTIONS. Nelson County Clerk Elaine Filiatreau told the court that her office has been receiving numerous phone calls regarding Saturday’s Republican presidential caucus.
Because the caucus is conducted by the Republican Party of Kentucky and not part of the usual primary election process, her office has no role in Saturday’s caucus.
Filiatreau said her office is answering questions and referring people to the state GOP website, www.RPK.org.
For Saturday’s caucus, there is one voting location in Nelson County — the cafeteria at Bardstown High School, 400 North Fifth St. in Bardstown. The polls are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to all registered Republicans in Nelson County.
The caucus will only decide the Republican nominee — the other primary races for both parties will be on the ballot for the May 17 primary.
In other business, the court:
— Watts told the court he is still negotiating with utility companies regarding the possible addition of the county’s 911 fees on county residents’ utility bills.
— approved a five-year tax moratorium request from Corey Boernsen to renovate the former church building at 4560 Louisville Road for use as a single-family home.
— received the Nelson County Sheriff’s end-of-year report that notes the county can expect $17,410.25 in excess fees after the department’s audit.
— received the Nelson County Clerk’s end-of-year report noting it will return $477,567 in excess fees to the county. County Clerk Elaine Filiatreau noted that she anticipates adding another deputy clerk in the next year.
Filiatreau also told the court the Sutherland Building’s electrical service needed upgrades, as well as the HVAC system. She also said she would like to improve the safety of the staff by better regulating customer traffic in the office.
