DOROTHY MARGARET ZURKUHLEN

Dorothy Margaret Zurkuhlen, 92, of Bardstown, died Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at her residence. She was born Jan. 8, 1924, in Louisville to the late August and Clara Klehammer Stiefvater. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She retired in Bardstown, where she served for many years as a home health aide for the sisters of Charity of Nazareth. She was an CNA at Nazareth and a dedicated member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Bardstown.

She was an avid quilter and affectionately shared her works of art with her loved ones. She was a lover of nature and gardening, especially chirping birds and the season spring, for the new life that blooms.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Leo Zurkuhlen Sr.; and an infant daughter, Mary Frances Zurkuhlen.

She is survived by six daughters, Ann (Rex) Downey of Louisville, Carolyn (Dave) Harrah of Brooks, Joan (Joe) Halbleib of Cadiz, Agnes Apted of Boston, and Paula (Tom) Walton and Mary (Fred) Brady, both of Bardstown; three son, Leo (Kathy) Zurkuhlen,Jr., and Greg (Patty) Zurkuhlen, both of Louisville, and Richard (Minnie) Zurkuhlen of Shepherdsville; 29 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren.

The Mass of Christian Burial is 9:30 a.m. Friday, March 4, 2016, at St. Thomas Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery with the Rev. Ben Brown officiating.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 2016, at the Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home with prayers at 7 p.m.

The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of donations for Masses or to the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.

The Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home, 1475 New Shepherdsville Road in Bardstown is in charge of arrangements.
