IONE CHURCHILL SNIDER MAY

Ione Churchill Snider May, 99, of Bardstown, died Monday, March 14, 2016. She was born May 30, 1916, to Lettitia and Albert Snider in Spencer County. She lived in many places during her childhood, settling in Danville at 17 in order to attend Centre College where she met William Howard “Bill” May. They were King and Queen of Centre College’s Carnival Celebration in 1937, and eloped soon afterward.

She returned to Centre College for her senior year and received her BA in English in 1938. Later she received a teaching degree from Nazareth College and taught school at Eli Brown Elementary School for one year. She then worked as an employee of the state of Kentucky in the Department of Social Services as a social worker and as a supervisor. She performed with the Bardstown Little Theater and was a dedicated golfer, gardener, and an avid bridge player.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, William H. (Bill) May; and two grandchildren, Brian May and John (Johnny) B. Hamilton III.

She is survived by five children, John Darrell May, Jean F. May, Anne M. (John) Hamilton, William A. May and Maribeth (Dennis) Stork; three grandchildren, Sharon May Paulson, Leo Haydon Hamilton and Mary Ruth Hamilton Picou; and one great-grandchild, Paige Ione Paulson.

The graveside service is 10:15 am Tuesday, March 29, 2016, at the Bardstown Cemetery followed by a Memorial Service at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Memorial contributions may go to First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

The Barlow Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
