Obituary: Newman Talbott Guthrie Jr., 77, Louisville

Newman Talbott Guthrie Jr., 77, of Louisville, died April 5, 2016, following a brief illness.

NEWMAN TALBOTT GUTHRIE JR.

He was born in Bardstown Sept. 8, 1938, to the late Newman and Sabina Kelley Guthrie, He graduated from St. Joseph’s Preparatory Academy, Northwestern University and the University of Michigan law school. He practiced law for many years and culminated his career at Kentucky Fried Chicken.

He was a member and past President of Owl Creek Country Club, a member of The Big Chill Group, Broncos and the Table of Knowledge. He was a voracious reader and enjoyed traveling, golf and spending time with family and friends. He will be remembered especially for his stories, wit and worldly knowledge.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ellen VanDusen Guthrie; two daughters, Aimee Guthrie Kemper (Carter) of Cincinnati and Catherine Sabina Guthrie of Marshall, N.C.; one son, Newman Talbott Guthrie III of Portland Ore.; and six grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will take place from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2016, at the Owl Creek Country Club in Anchorage. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Guthrie Opportunity Center of Nelson County, c/o Scarlett G. Hibbs, 713 N. Third St., Bardstown, KY 40004.

The Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home, 1475 New Shepherdsville Road, is in charge of the arrangements.
