Obituary: Elwood Coomes Sr., 92, Cox’s Creek
Elwood Coomes Sr., 92, of Cox’s Creek, died Saturday, April 23, 2016, at the residence of his son. He was born Dec. 25, 1923, in Nelson County to the late Augustus and Mamie Snellen Coomes. He was a retired employee of T.W. Samuels and Waterfill & Frazier Distillery. He was a farmer, a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church. He loved coon hunting, horses, and being in the woods.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Annie M. Coomes; one daughter, Barbara Lyvers; one son, Christopher Coomes; one sister, Hazel Bowman; one brother, Preston Coomes; one granddaughter, Melissa Cunningham; and two nieces and one nephew.
He is survived by five daughters, Doris Buchanan of Shepherdsville, Teresa Depoyster of Cox’s Creek, Mary Jo Borders of Vine Grove, Becky Willis of New Haven, and Dorothy Meredith of Bardstown; one son, Elwood (Susan) Coomes Jr. of Cox’s Creek; five sisters, Dorothy Meyer, Helen Shain, Mildred (Hansford) Milligan, Barbara (Austin) Weller, Glenda (Allen Ray) Magruder, all of Cox’s Creek; 47 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; 60 great-great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-great-grandchildren; 21 nieces and nephews; and numerous other family and friends.
The funeral is 11 a.m. Friday, April 29, 2016 at the Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home, 1475 New Shepherdsville Road with burial in the Mount Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery.
Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
