Obituary: Richard Aloysius ‘Simon’ Walters, 81, New Hope
Richard Aloysius “Simon” Walters, 81, of New Hope, died Friday, May 13, 2016, at Spring View Hospital in Lebanon.
He was born June 21, 1934, in Colorado Springs, Colo. to the late Ludwig Albert and Sadie Britt Walters. He graduated from Regis College in Denver, served in the U.S. Navy, and worked in various fields including The American Life Lobby in Washington, DC. He joined the St. Martin de Porres Lay Dominican Community in 1983.
He was a Third Order Dominican who worked tirelessly and prayerfully to promote respect for the lives of unborn babies and assistance for their mothers. He was deeply loyal to friends and, with ready heart and hand, was always a helper, whether with small errand or large project. We will miss him and his signature song, “To Dream the Impossible Dream.”
Survivors include one daughter, Jennifer Walters of Boise, Idaho; one son, Ronald Walters of Dayton, Ohio; one sister, Mary Smith of Utah; one brother, Larry Walters of Colorado; two grandchildren, Sara Jean Couture of Pennsylvania and Sean Michael Couture of Idaho; and many friends in New Hope, Kentucky.
The Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Thursday, May 19, 2016, at Our Mother of Sorrows Chapel, 3050 Gap Knob Road in New Hope with The Rev. Kevin McGrath, OP, officiating. Burial is in the St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery in New Hope, where military rites will be performed by the Marion County Veterans’ Honor Guard.
Visitation is 10-11 a.m. Thursday at the Our Mother of Sorrows Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Little Way Pregnancy Resource Center, 515 W. Oak St, Louisville, KY 40203, are requested.
The Mattingly Funeral Home in Loretto is in charge of the arrangements.
