Obituary: Mary Aline Briggs, 92, formerly of Bardstown

MARY ALINE BRIGGS

Mary Aline Briggs, 92, formerly of Bardstown, died Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at the Loretto Motherhouse. She was born April 18, 1924, in Nelson County to the late David Edgar and Amy Susan Shipp Gilkey. She was a former clerk for Ice’s Produce and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where she was a volunteer for many functions. She was a volunteer for bingo, the nursing homes and was a hospice volunteer for 20 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J. R. Briggs; and two brothers, Billy Gilkey and Bobby Gilkey.

She is survived by two daughters, Susan (Richard) Vaughn and Libby (John) Trager, both of Cox’s Creek; four sons, James Thomas (Ruth) Briggs of Cox’s Creek, Walter David (Donna) Briggs of Bloomington, Ind., Robert Kenneth Briggs and Michael L. Briggs, both of Cox’s Creek; two sisters, Betty McGirk and Martha Pile, both of Bardstown; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Saturday, May 21, 2016, at. Gregory Catholic Church with burial in the St. Joseph Cemetery. The Rev. Joseph Batcheldor is the celebrant.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday, May 20, 2016, with a prayer service Friday, and 8-9:30 a.m. at the Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home, 1475 New Shepherdsville Road in Bardstown.

The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Sisters of Loretto Retirement Fund, 515 Nerinx, KY 40049.

The Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
