Nelson GOP votes go to Moffett; Dems back Walker over Grimes

Tuesday, May 17, 2011, 8 p.m. — Louisville businessman Phil Moffett carried Nelson County by a wide margin in the GOP primary for governor, topping Senate President David Wiliams by a 513 to 342 vote margin in Tuesday’s primary election. At press time, Williams led in the statewide tally.
Jefferson County Clerk Bobbie Hoslclaw was a distant third in the county with 91 votes.
Voter turnout in Nelson County was lower than predicted: 9.28 percent.
Other Republicans who carried Nelson County in the primary include Bill Johnson over Hilda Legg in the primary for secretary of state (491 votes to 355); John T. Kemper III over Addia Wuchner in the state auditor’s race (514 votes to 303); James R. Comer over Rob Rothenburger in the ag commissioner primary (530 votes to 326).
Nelson County Democrats also decided several contested races in the primary: Elaine Walker over Alison Lundergan Grimes, 946 votes to 804 in the primary for secretary of state; incumbent state treasurer L.J. “Todd” Hollenbach over challenger Steve Hamrick, 1,268 votes to 460. In the ag commissioner’s race, Nelson Democrats gave the nod to Robert “Bob” Farmer, who received 32.47 percent of the vote compared to Stewart Gritton (22.08 percent), John Faris Lackey (17.09 percent), B.D. Wilson (17.03 percent) and David Williams (11.33 percent).
