“The enthusiasm from the parents, staff, and school community for Mr. Payton’s leadership was clear when we reviewed our survey data early on,” Orr said. “As we worked through the search process, he remained an outstanding candidate. We look forward to the impact of his dedication to the New Haven students and community.”

Payton said he was looking forward to moving into his new position.

“I was excited to come to New Haven four years ago as an assistant principal and I am excited about stepping into the principal role now,” he said.

Payton cited “a tight-knit community, a lot of parent support and a really strong PTO,” as key strengths he has found in New Haven.

Payton also voiced high praise for the “Leader In Me” program that will next year enter its second year at New Haven School.

“I do intend to get the community and teachers more involved in leadership roles, and forming the direction the school is going to go,” Payton said.

Toward that end, he also wants the school achieve the “Leader In Me” Lighthouse status while strengthening K-Prep scores and reducing staff turnover. Lighthouse status is a major indicator of success within the “Leader In Me” program.

Payton and wife, Beth, have four children. They live in Bardstown.
