Obituary: Joseph Edward ‘Buck’ Wheatley, 93, Springfield

Joseph Edward “Buck” Wheatley, 93, of Bardstown Road, Springfield, died at 10:10 a.m., Sunday, June 26, 2016, at the Thomson-Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore. He was a native of Washington County and was born March 27, 1923, to the late John Thomas and Nancy Filiatreau Wheatley.

He was a lifelong member of the St. Rose Catholic Church. He was a graduate of St. Agnes Elementary School and Fredericktown High School. He was a lifelong farmer and a Kentucky Colonel. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army who served in the Philippines during World War II. He served on the Washington County Cooperative Tobacco Warehouse board of directors and was an employee of the former New Home Tobacco Warehouse. For 26 years he drove a school bus for the Washington County School System.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Mary Gertrude Thomas Wheatley (Feb. 9, 2001); six sisters, Sarah Wheatley, Anna Laura Osbourne, Josephine Fowler, Martina Newton, Caroline Britt and Catherine Farnsley; one grandson, Aaron Neel (Aug. 12, 2011); an infant granddaughter, Melissa Carol Neel (1970); and a grandson-in-law, Adam Hughes (2005).

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Neel (Joe) of Bardstown and Lorrie Wheatley (Bill) of Springfield; three grandchildren, Pat Neel (Susan) of Springfield, Emily Cheek (Jason) of Bardstown and Sara Mattingly Hughes of Cox’s Creek; six great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and seven stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

The Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2016, at St. Rose Catholic Church with the Rev. Kevin McGrath officiating. Burial is in the church cemetery where military rites will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Carey & Son Funeral Home in Springfield with a prayer service at 7 p.m. by the Rev. Kevin McGrath.

Pallbearers will be his nephews, Eddie Newton, Lonnie Fowler, Dennis Stapp, Damion Osbourne, Ricky Thomas and Steve Thomas.

His nieces will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The Carey & Son Funeral Home in Springfield is in charge of the arrangements.
