Obituary: Susan Elaine Hammond, 67, Lexington
Susan Elaine Hammond, 67, of Lexington, wife of Gerald Smith, died Wednesday, July 6, 2016.
She was a graduate of the University of Alabama and received her Master’s Degree in English from the University of Kentucky. She had a long and distinguished career in public relations. She served as managing editor of The Thoroughbred Record and was supervisor of writers in the Department of Public Information under Gov. Julian Carroll.
She founded Pitch Advertising where she produced The Winner’s Circle and Inside Harness Racing for television. She was editor or producer for more than 400 television commercials. Pitch was prominent in statewide politics.
She was a partner in Bardstown Radio Team with her husband, Bob and Bonny Manning, and Roth and Lisa Stratton. The company is the owner of WBRT AM/FM in Bardstown.
She was a beloved friend, devoted animal lover and avid gardener. She was the perfect audience for the understated wit of her husband of nearly 39 years, Gerald Smith, with whom she ran campaigns across the state while developing lasting friendships.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one sister, Anne Proffitt (Doug) and their children; and two brothers, Thomas Taylor Hammond (Sheila) and their children, and Claude Hammond(Chris Baker).
The funeral is 11 a.m. Monday, July 11, 2016, at the Second Presbyterian Church, 460 E Main St, Lexington with burial at the Lexington Cemetery, 833 W Main St, Lexington.
Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Sunday, July 10, 2016, at the Milward-Southland Funeral Home, 391 Southland Drive, Lexington.
Memorial donations may be go to the Woodford Humane Society.
