Obituary: Robert Larry Shields, 58, Cox’s Creek

Robert Larry Shields, 58, of Cox’s Creek, died Friday, July 8, 2016, at Robley Rex VA Medical Center. He was born Nov. 2, 1957, in Bardstown to the late Estel and Marietta Downs Shields. He was a retired employee of Publishers Printing, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of St. funeral_doveGregory Catholic Church. He was an avid fisherman, woodworker and loved working in his yard.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, William “Billy” Shields, John Anthony “Tony” Shields, Donnie Shields, Charles Estel Shields and a nephew Dale Shields.

He is survived by his wife Linda Wiedemer Shields; one son, Estel Girdley of Cox’s Creek; two stepdaughters, Jeanette (Patrick) Salmon of New Madrid and Kimberly (Brett) Chambers of Shelbyville; five sisters, Ruby Monroe and Anna Shields, both of Bardstown, Jeanie (Robert) Fulkerson of Cox’s Creek, Shelia (Clinton) Johnson of Lebanon Junction, and Mary Elizabeth Long of Mount Washington; two brothers, Joseph Paul “J.P.” Shields of Lebanon Junction and Richard (Diane) Shields of Bardstown; one grandchild; five stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

The funeral is 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 12, 2016, at the Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home with burial in the St. Joseph Cemetery with Deacon Michael Wiedemer officiating.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Monday and after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. A prayer service is 7 p.m. Monday.

The Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home, 1475 New Shepherdsville Road, is in charge of arrangements.
