Thursday, July 28, 2016, 11 p.m. — The Bardstown Police Department Facebook page became unavailable to visitors during the day Wednesday and was still down as of 11:30 p.m. Thursday, prompting widespread speculation about what prompted its disappearance.
Some of the speculation focused on who took the page down — Facebook or representatives of the police department.
Facebook pages generally can be disabled or removed by Facebook if a complaint about page’s content is lodged and is determined to be a valid. Pages may also be disabled by a request to Facebook, or by individuals who are designated as the page’s administrators.
In a social media message Thursday night, Bardstown Mayor John Royalty explained that the Bardstown Police Facebook page was taken down because of “possible improper use by unknown individuals.”
Royalty said the department Facebook page was then taken down after attempts to change the password to restrict access to police department personnel were unsuccessful. He did not advise when the department’s Facebook page may return.
FIVE LEVELS OF PAGE ACCESS. Facebook pages for businesses and groups can assign one of five different roles that allow individuals varying degrees of access to manage a Facebook page.
ADMINISTRATOR. The administrator has the greatest access, and includes the ability to mange roles and all page settings; edit the page and apps; create and delete posts; send messages; respond to and delete comments and posts; remove and ban people from the page; create ads; and view page insights and statistics.
EDITOR. The editor role has all the privileges of the Administrator except the ability to manage page roles or grant others access.
MODERATOR. Moderators can send private messages on behalf of the page, respond to or delete comments; ban people from the page, view insights and create ads.
ADVERTISER. Advertisers are limited to creating ads for the page and viewing page statistics.
ANALYST. The Analyst role is the most restricted role, giving access only to view page statistics.
