Obituary: Francis Lloyd ‘Frank’ Thompson III, 70, Bardstown

Francis Lloyd “Frank” Thompson III, 70, of Bardstown, died peacefully, Friday, Aug. 19, 2016, at Norton Hospital in Louisville.

He was born Sept. 4, 1945, in Loretto. He graduated from St. Joe Prep and attended Bellarmine University. In 1967 he and his father opened Convenient Food Mart No. 77 on West Stephen Foster in the Maple Hill neighborhood. In 1968 they opened “Daniel Boone Chicken and Beef,” now known as Stephen Foster Restaurant. In 1970, with his brother Louie and father, they opened Convenient Food Mart No. 106 at 708 North Third St. In 1995 they remodeled and built the store as Thompson Food Mart. He retired in 2010 and sold his interest in the business. He formerly served on the St. Joseph Parish Council and the boards of the Chamber of Commerce and My Old Kentucky Home Country Club. He enjoyed fishing and hunting but most of all his children and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd Thompson II and Anna Catherine Thompson; one infant granddaughter, Lauren Elizabeth Thompson; his in-laws, Charles Chester and Leona Ballard Simms; and two brothers-in-law, Francis Wayne Simms and Charles Louis Simms.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Jane Simms Thompson; one daughter, Julie Young (Jim) of Ellicott City, Md.; one son, Frank Thompson IV (Marcy) of Columbia, Mo.; two sisters, Saundra Lee (Dennis) of Bardstown and Cabrina Dant (Kenny) of Louisville; three brothers, Louie Thompson (Michelle), Wally Thompson (Doris), both of Bardstown and Jude Thompson (Harper) of Louisville; eight sisters-in-law, Sr. Grace Simms, O.P. of St. Catharine, Louise Edelen, Betty Blair, Vernice Simms, Rita Harrod (Tom), all of Louisville, Gerri Keysor of Laguna Woods, Calif., Evelyn Edelen (Joe) of Naples, Fla. and Maggie O’Bryan (Joe) of Owensboro; two brothers-in-law, Chester Simms (Nora) and Tom Simms (Rose), both of Lebanon; and seven grandchildren, Bailey Ann, Alison and Tori Young, all of Maryland and Landry Grace, Tyler, Lexie Rose and Cate Thompson, all of Missouri.

The Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 22, 2016, at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral with the Rev. C. Joseph Batcheldor and Rev. J. Jason Harris concelebrating. Burial is in the church cemetery.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, 2016, and 9-10:30 p.m. Monday at Barlow Funeral Home.

The family requests expressions of sympathy to take the form of contributions to Bethlehem High School, St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral or St. Joseph School.

Pallbearers are Justin Koch, Adam Thompson, Jude Dant, Bridget Lee, Therese Lee Wethington, Karen T. Downard, Aaron Thompson and Ryan Simms.

The Mattingly Funeral Home in Loretto is in charge of the arrangements.
