Early Sunday morning single car crash claims life of Botland man

Sunday, Aug. 21, 2016, 3:40 p.m. — A Botland man died early Sunday morning after the car he was driving caught on fire after it left the roadway and struck a stone gate post on US 150, the Springfield Road.

sheriffbadgeAccording to the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, Tyler Kays, 24, of Greer Lane, was heading east on Springfield Road when the 2007 Saab he was operating cross into the westbound lanes, left the roadway and caught fire after it struck a stone support for a steel gate.

Nelson County Fire Department units and the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched at 2:55 a.m. for the reported vehicle fire about a half of a mile west of 150 Quick Stop.

The first firefighters at the scene reported the car was fully engulfed in flames. Fire crews shut down Springfield Road while they brought the fire under control.

Kays was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by the Nelson County Coroner. The accident is still under investigation by NCSO Deputy Levi Preston.
