VIRGINIA LEE AVIS

Virginia Lee Avis, 69, of Bardstown, died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016, at her residence. She was born Jan. 21, 1947, in Nelson County to the late Wayne Russell and Alpha Katherine Owens Cook. She was a retired employee of Owens-Illinois, now American Fuji Seal. She was a Kentucky Colonel, a volunteer at Bluegrass Assisted Living and a member of New Salem Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Keith Avis; one daughter, Deborah Logsdon; and one sister, Mayme Hopkins.

She is survived by three daughters, Jennifer Hutchins, of Bardstown, Elaine Richardson of LaGrange and Barbara Armstrong of Lebanon; four sisters, Geneva Shawler of Cox’s Creek, Dixie Sachleben of Milton, Eula Yancey of Paducah, and Willena Cooney of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The funeral is 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016, at the Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home with Bro. Jonathan Gann officiating. Burial is in New Salem Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016, and after 9 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

The Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
