Friday, Oct. 7, 2016, 12:30 p.m. — State Rep. David Floyd has declined an appointment to a special investigative committee that is charged with determining Gov. Matt Bevin’s alleged threats against Democratic state Rep. Russ Meyer.
In a letter released Friday, Oct. 7, 2016, Floyd advises House Speaker Greg Stumbo that he is putting the concerns of his family first — and reminded Stumbo those concerns led him to the decision not to run for re-election.
Floyd’s daughter, Dr. J.B. “Bethie” Ward, was diagnosed in January with an aggressive form of cancer.
“As a father as well, I trust you fully understand my situation and where my focus must be,” Floyd wrote in his letter.
The committee Stumbo appointed is in response to voice mails Meyer released in August that he said were from the governor.
In the voicemail, Bevin identifies himself by name and reminded him of the impact of the governor’s decisions on Meyer, his seat and his district.
Meyer represents parts of Fayette and Jessamine Counties, where the Brannon Crossing shopping center is located.
Stumbo told Lexington’s WKYT that the panel’s mission is fact-finding only.
“This is not political, it’s about the integrity of this chamber,” Stumbo said. “This is not an impeachment committee. This is a committee to find what the facts are.”
