Thursday, Nov. 10, 2016, 2 a.m. — Bardstown’s new police chief was sworn-in by Mayor John Royalty at the start of Wednesday’s special-called City Council meeting.
Steve Uram, formerly of Texas but now a resident of Bardstown, took the oath of office while a crowd of family and friends filled the council chambers.
Prior to the council’s vote confirming Uram as police chief, Councilman Bill Buckman — a member of the committee that interviewed more than 20 candidates for the job — said Uram was the top-scoring candidate the committee reviewed and thus was their top pick.
Uram’s experience includes his start in policing as a member of the Jefferson County, Ky., police department from 1983 to 1990; the Everett, Wash. Police Department (1981-2006); a military contractor who trained Afghan and Iraqi police forces (2006-2008) and director of security for a national security company (2009-2016).
Uram said his first day on the job would be Thursday, Nov. 10.
In comments after the council meeting, Royalty said he was impressed by the unique skill set Uram brings to the job as the city’s new police chief.
“His resume stood out and his interview was exceptional,” he said. “He’ll be a good fit for this police department and a great candidate to move it forward.”
