Bardstown man indicted on arson charges after setting passenger car on fire

Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016, 1 p.m. — A Bardstown man was indicted Wednesday by a Nelson County grand jury on charges that include second-degree arson, three counts of wanton endangerment in the first-degree; possession of a handgun by a convicted felon; and first-degree persistent felony offender.

According to the indictment, on Oct. 5, 2016, Justin D. Borders 27, of Bardstown, allegedly tried to start a fire to destroy or damage a 1997 Honda Accord that put three people in danger of death or serious injury. The indictment states that at the time, Border was also in possession of a Taurus .380 pistol. The indictment cites his prior felony convictions as the basis for the first-degree persistent felony offender charge against Borders.

According to the Nelson County Jail logs, Borders was arrested Wednesday on these charges, plus one count of resisting arrest. He was lodged in the Nelson County Jail. Bail was set at $50,000 cash only, plus conditions.

Second-degree arson is a Class B felony punishable by 10 to 20 years in prison; first-degree wanton endangerment is a Class D felony punishable by one to five years in prison; and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon is Class C felony that is punishable by five to 10 years in prison.

Borders will be arraigned on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2016, in Nelson Circuit Court.
