Obituary: William G. Brown, 77, Bardstown

WILLIAM G. “BILL” BROWN

William G. Brown, 77, former mayor of Bardstown, died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville. He was born July 29, 1939, in Samuels, attended Bethlehem Academy, St. Gregory, St. Joe Prep, St. Catharine Junior College and Bellarmine College. He worked at Hurst Restaurant in Bardstown for seven years, the Internal Revenue Service in Louisville for six years before co-founding Brown & Smith CPA’s in 1968 and Brown & Company CPA’s in 1996.

During his lifetime he especially enjoyed opera, attending frequent performances in Louisville, New York and other cities. He served on the opera board of trustees for seven years, participating in the Executive, Finance and Endowment Committees. He served on the Farmers Bank (Later Town & Country Bank & Trust Co.) board of directors, serving on the Executive, Finance, Audit, Trust, Compensation and Planning Committees. He retired in 2009 as vice-chairman of the board.

He was a proud member of the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral of Bardstown and sang in the choir for a number of years.

From 1969 to 2002 he served the City of Bardstown in various ways. He served on the boards of the Bardstown-Nelson County Chamber of Commerce, Bardstown Industrial board, Nelson County Industrial board, Bardstown Community Theater (where he was its first President), Spalding Hall/Historical Development board, the Kentucky League of Cities, the Lincoln Trail Area Development District board, the Bardstown City Council and mayor of Bardstown.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Gilbert Brown and Mary Louise Hurst Brown; one sister, Katherine L. Brown House; and one brother, Charles Gamie Brown.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Beverly A. Matheis Brown of Bardstown; one daughter, Elizabeth A. Brown (David) Terrell of Louisville; one son, William Gilbert (Lisa) Brown III of Bardstown; one sister, Mollie Rose Brown of Mount Vernon, Ill.; one brother, Joseph Len (Penny) Brown of San Diego; four grandchildren, William Gilbert Brown IV, Alexander Michael Brown, Julia Ann Terrell, and Mathew Thomas Terrell; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Mass is 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016, at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral with the Rev. Terry Bradshaw officiating. Burial is in the St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, 2016 and 8-9:15 a.m. Saturday at Barlow Funeral Home. A prayer service is set for Friday evening.

Memorial contributions may go to Bethlehem High School.
