Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017, 5 p.m. — A Springfield man who allegedly stole merchandise from Advanced Auto Parts Friday morning was arrested by Bardstown Police after a foot pursuit through snowy city streets and wooded areas that involved several officers.

police_badgeNelson County Dispatch received a call from the auto parts store at about 10:20 a.m. Friday that a man in a black coat and hat had entered the store, grabbed some merchandise, and ran out the door without paying. From the store, the man ran through the Bardstown Cemetery to the area of the First Christian Church, then into the woods behind the church. Police tracked his footprints in the snow through the woods, across the creek, and up to the South Salem Drive area.

Bardstown Police Chief Steve Uram was on Salem Drive and spotted a local taxi cab heading north after apparently picking up a customer. Uram followed the cab on South Salem onto East John Rowan and conducted a traffic stop at the Kentucky Home Square shopping center parking lot near the PNC Bank. The suspect exited the cab and fled from officers west toward Tractor Supply. Eye witnesses who saw the subject run from police reported the suspect’s location to Nelson County Dispatch while officers pursued the man on foot. The suspect looped around the shopping center and was met by police officers as he walked in front of the storefronts. He was arrested and lodged in the Nelson County Jail.

One of the officers involved in the foot pursuit at the shopping center was injured after falling on ice. He was treated at the scene by Nelson County eMS and transported to Flaget Memorial Hospital for evaluation and treatment.
