Community news

Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017 — The members of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), Chapter 1050, heard about volunteer opportunities at the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace at its January meeting.

Phyllis Higdon Gentry a volunteer at the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace, provided details about the park’s Volunteer-In-Parks (VIP) Program. The park’s VIPs assist the park by staffing information desks, greeting visitors, answering questions, assisting with special interpretive programs and events throughout the year (early American crafts and demonstrations), spring cleanup at the birthplace and caring for the historical garden at Lincoln Boyhood Home.

Volunteer opportunities at Abraham Lincoln Birthplace and Boyhood Home are as diverse as the cultural and historical resources of the parks. Many of these vital park operations and services could not be provided without the help and assistance of the park’s dedicated volunteers. To become a VIP, call the park’s Volunteer Coordinator at (270) 358-3137.  To stay current on the latest NARFE news like us at www.facebook.com/narfe1050.
