Obituary: Basil Lyon, 97, Loretto

Basil Lyon, 97, of Loretto, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017, at his residence. He was born July 2, 1919, in Loretto. He and his family operated the old Lyon’s General Store. He was a World War II veteran of the U. S. Army and a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Lee Lyon; his parents, Joseph Herbert and Mabel Elizabeth Cambron Lyon; two sisters, Grace Mattingly and Eunice Bowling; and three brothers, Henry Lyon, the Rev. George Lyon OSB and Bro. Brian Lyon CSC.

Survivors include two daughters, Sally Hancock (Terry) of Lebanon and Alice Lyon (Mary O’Doherty) of Louisville; two grandsons, Casey Hancock and Terry Wayne Hancock Jr.; five great-grandchildren;

one sister, Hazel Miles of Louisville; two brothers, Raphael Lyon (Betty) and the Rev. Joseph A. “Doc” Lyon, both of Louisville; a number of nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 6785 Highway 52, Loretto with the Rev. Bryan Lamberson officiating.

Burial is in the church cemetery where military rites will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation is 3-9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, 2017, at the Mattingly Funeral Home, 195 Holy Cross Road, Loretto.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may go toward the St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery, c/o Saint Francis of Assisi Church, PO Box 74, Loretto, KY 40037.

The Mattingly Funeral Home in Loretto is in charge of arrangements.
