Board chairman Jim Roby and Superintendent Brent Holsclaw open Tuesday’s meeting of the Bardstown City Schools board of education.

At its regular monthly meeting Tuesday, the board approved a contract with Kerry McCarthy, the facilitator who will focus on the process the district will use in developing the plan.

McCarthy said her background is not in education, and her focus will be on guiding the district in gather data and creating a formal process. She will meet soon with Superintendent Brent Holsclaw and the district’s administrators to begin gathering information to get the process started.

Holsclaw said a special March 21 meeting will give the board of education an opportunity to review the data gathered and to decided if the district is ready to continue the next step.

The strategic plan will also incorporate opportunities for improvement that were identified during the district’s AdvancED accreditation process.

Holsclaw also said the district’s AdvancED accreditation was an opportunity to determine the district’s strengths and weakness.

The district’s scores in the AdvancED review scored higher than national averages of the participating 32,000 schools reviewed by AdvancED.

“We put ourselves out there to be a better school district,” he said.

Opportunities for improvement include developing a district strategic plan; develop training to insure staff can evaluate assessment data to improve instruction; and working to make sure every student has at least one adult advocate to support their learning experience.

In other business, the board:

— learned that the district has collected 97 percent of its 2016 property taxes.

— reviewed the Bardstown Primary School delivery targets with principal Michelle Ryan.

— approved a new lease for the two buildings it uses on Pennsylvania Avenue for the district’s
daycare. The new five year lease will include a 3 percent increase in the second year.
