Wednesday, March 1, 2017, 4 a.m. — Three fire departments were needed to fight a fire that heavily damaged storage units off Filiatreau Drive early Wednesday bardstown_fire_200morning.

At 1:37 a.m., Bardstown Police, Fire and Nelson County EMS were dispatched to a report of a storage unit on fire adjacent to apartments on Avondale Drive. Several nearby residents called 911 Dispatch to report the fire. When firefighters arrived on scene, they requested additional manpower and equipment from the Nelson County Fire Department and the Northeast Nelson Fire Department.

The blaze was fueled by high winds as severe thunderstorm storms passed through the area. Firefighters had to deal with severe weather conditions while fighting the fire. The blaze was so intense that the apartments closest to the burning storage units were temporarily evacuated. The residents were later allowed to return to their homes.

Firefighters remained at the scene as of 4 a.m. Wednesday.
