Wednesday, March 22, 2017, 11 p.m. — Yes I was there, in the thick of President Donald Trump’s visit to Louisville Monday night.
Wow what an event — the cheers, the boos, the speeches, the signs, the security, the long lines, the media and the protesters. It was a great feeling to be in a crowd of 18,000 of festive people that were of like mind and were automatically connected by this one man, our new president.
Why would people want to stand in line for hours — even before the venue would open the door? What would drive people to leave the comfort of their own homes to do this?
The political drama was thick in the air, even campy at times with the red, white, and blue so audaciously displayed. The music was loud and raucous. It was almost circus like, very much like a sporting event, but with only only one team.
All the speeches were positive and uplifting , all looking toward the future with hope and promise that our future will be better. Who does not want to hear this and believe it?. I want this better future for me, my family, as well as for all of America. I found myself wondering why would we all be so hopeful that the president will be the one who can make the change in our government that would directly affect every one of us in so many different possible ways.
While in the press area Monday night at Freedom Hall, I could almost hear my father saying to me, “Listen, this is history in the making.” That’s because he did say that to me frequently when I was a kid. He was the most faithful 6 o’clock TV newswatcher I ever knew.
He insisted us kids be quiet when the national news was on. He would point to the TV screen of a report from a news correspondent covering the Vietnam War; later it was the July 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing. He made me appreciate the moment and the historical importance of it.
And so it is again now with President Donald J . Trump. My father isn’t here to see it, but I can hear him in my head telling me, “this is history in the making.” And President Trump is making history. He is adamant about rebuilding American greatness. He’s willing to speak his mind and not care if others disagree. Somehow that is refreshing.
President Trump sees situations differently than the typical newly elected president. He has a lot to learn about his new job, but what new POTUS doesn’t.
Yes, I was there, watching history in the making, proudly, hopeful, and cheering.
