Obituary: James Spencer Gootee Sr., 81, Loretto

James Spencer Gootee Sr., 81, of Loretto, died Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Cedars of Lebanon Nursing Center. He was born Jan. 13, 1936, in Marion County. He was a retired mechanic with Heaven Hill Distillery in Bardstown.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert William Gootee Sr. and Margaret Augustine Cambron Gootee; one daughter, Pamela Michelle Hutchins; one infant son, Charles Michael Gootee; one sister, Patty Burba; six brothers, Rob Gootee, Bill Gootee, Joe Gootee, Harry Gootee, Jerry Gootee and infant Benedict Gootee; one daughter-in-law, Theresa Ellen Woford Gootee; and one granddaughter, Alicia Ellen Gootee.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Clara Jean Hill Gootee; four daughters, Vicky Dean (Bo) of Lebanon, Lisa Nalley (Ernie Sallee) of Loretto, Robin Miles (Dink Dugan) of St. Francis and Kay Caldwell (Tim) of Calvary; two sons, Junior Gootee (Vickie) of Campbellsville and Michael Gootee (Tracy) of Loretto; two sisters, Margaret Ann Nalley of Louisville and Sissy Coy (Jody Hicks) of Shepherdsville; one brother, Donnie Gootee (Dorothy) of Loretto; 19 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren; and all his “angels” from Cedars of Lebanon.

The Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Friday, April 7, 2017, at St. Charles Catholic Church, 675 Highway 327, Lebanon with the Rev. David W. Naylor officiating. Burial is in the church cemetery.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Thursday at Mattingly Funeral Home, 195 Holy Cross Road, Loretto, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. by Deacon Joseph R. Dant.

Pallbearers are grandsons, Jamie Withrow, Rocky Pittman, Chuck Nalley, Joey Miles, Brandon Caldwell and Cody Wheatley. His other grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The Mattingly Funeral Home in Loretto is in charge of arrangements.
