Guthrie announces 2nd District Congressional Art Competition winners

Wednesday, April 26, 2017 — Nelson County High School student Marly Walls was announced today as the winner of the 2017 2nd Congressional District Art Competition by Congressman Brett Guthrie with her entry entitled “Rowan.”
“Every year I am excited to see the impressive artwork submitted by high school students across the Second District,” Guthrie said. “Congratulations to Marly and all of the students who submitted art this year. I look forward to meeting with her in Washington, D.C., where her artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for the next year.”
The winner and finalists were selected by an independent panel of art professors from colleges and universities across Kentucky’s 2nd Congressional District.
The competition, which began in 1982, allows the winning artwork from each Congressional District throughout the country to be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one full year.
As first-place overall winner Walls will receive two airline tickets to Washington, D.C., where she and a guest will attend a reception in their honor later this summer.
The overall second-place winner was Anna Wooten of Thomas Nelson High School. Leandra Hart of NCHS was named as one of the overal honorable mentions.
Additionally, Congressman Guthrie will have a “Facebook Favorite” competition for all the county winners, giving members of the general public the opportunity to vote for their favorites.
The artwork will be posted on his official Facebook page, and the wining piece will be displayed in Congressman Guthrie’s D.C. office. The online competition will be open from Wednesday, April 26 through 6 p.m. Saturday, April 29.
