Obituary: Bernard Warren Hagan, 77, Louisville

Bernard Warren Hagan, 77, of Louisville, died peacefully Monday, May 8, 2017,at Baptist East Hospital. He was born March 21,1940, in Bardstown to Leo Warren and Annie Laurie Boone Hagan. He lived in the Highlands neighborhood of Louisville for more than 45 years. He was known by his many friends and coworkers as “Pepe”, “Bear” or “Bernie”.

He was a graduate of St. Joe Preparatory School in Bardstown. He earned an Associate Degree at St. Catherine College in Springfield, a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Bellarmine University, and a Masters degree in business through Webster University of St. Louis. In his early career he taught in Kentucky and California. Returning to Louisville, he was employed by Brown Forman Corporation and retired from the company in early 2000.

He was known by all as a gifted dancer and singer. His other interests included reading, photography, collecting and refurbishing old furniture and vintage cars. He was involved in restoring an old home in the Highlands of Louisville. He was a former member of the Kentucky Opera Association, St. Brigid’s and St.Martin de Tours choir. He was a Brown Forman employee volunteer for the United Way of Louisville from 1986-1992. He served in the Kentucky Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve Units in Kentucky, California, and Indiana. He was honorably discharged in 1969.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo Warren and Annie Laurie Boone Hagan and two brothers-in-law, Martin A McNulty of St. Petersburg, Fla. and John Petricini of Dallas.

He is survived by seven siblings, Nancy Hagan and Trudy McNulty, both of St. Petersburg, Fla, Jim Hagan (Gina), Pat Hagan (Cluny) and Sheila Abell (Mike), all of Bardstown, Laurie Froelich (Andy) of Tarpon Springs, Fla., and Barbara Buxton (John) of Dallas; 12 nieces and nephews; and 15 great-nieces and great-nephews.

The Mass of Christian burial is 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at St.Brigid Catholic Church, 1520 Hepburn Ave, Louisville. Immediately following will be a Celebration of Life at Goetz Hall in lower level of the church.

The family has chosen cremation with burial at 5 p.m. Saturday in the St.Joseph Cemetery in Bardstown.

The Hagan family members would like to express our deepest appreciation for the compassionate and holistic care given by the Doctors and Staff at Louisville’s Baptist East ICU, their Palliative Care Unit and the staff at Hosparus of Louisville.
