Monday, June 19, 2017, 10 p.m. — The listening sessions conducted by the Nelson County Schools last week were well attended and productive, according to Superintendent Anthony Orr.

The meetings were held at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. last Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, to examine the challenges parents, teachers, staff and the general public identify as issues to try to resolve at the district’s schools.

The meeting topics were school safety on Tuesday, academics on Wednesday, and school culture on Thursday.

“We really just listened to people’s concerns in those three areas,” Orr said of the meetings.

People wrote their concerns down and they were posted on a wall and the prioritized. While the focus has been on issues ongoing at Old Kentucky Home Middle School and Nelson County High School, the concerns are applicable across the district.

BRAINSTORMING THIS WEEK. This week’s meetings will repeat the three topic areas in the same order, with the focus on brainstorming solutions to the problems that were identified last week, he said.

For those who want to attend the brainstorming sessions, you can see the lists of concerns from last week’s meetings by clicking here to visit the school district’s website.

“I’m excited to hear what folks have to bring to the table,” he said.

The public is invited to attend any of this week’s meetings, which will be held in the cafeteria of Old Kentucky Home Middle School.

School safety meetings are set for 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday, while the academics and school culture meetings will be at 6 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
