Obituary: Lillian Abell Kidwell, 92, Springfield
Lillian Abell Kidwell, 92, of East Grundy Avenue, Springfield, died at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, June 25, 2017, at her home. She was a native of Washington County. She was born June 3, 1925, to the late William Joseph “W.J.”and Nellie Rudd Smith.
She was a member of the St. Rose Catholic Church, a graduate of Presentation Academy in Louisville and in 1948-49 attended St. Joseph School of Medical Technology and Nazareth (now Spalding University). She was a medical technologist having retired from the Taylor County Hospital. She was also a farmer.
She was preceded in death by first husband, James Cyril Abell (Nov. 15, 1970); her second husband, Julian P. Kidwell (Sept. 20, 2003); one sister, Patricia O’Bryan; one brother, Richard Smith; one grandson, Jonathon Cyril Abell (Jan. 10, 2011); and a special aunt, Sr. Sarah Frances Rudd.
Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Ray (Russell), Margaret Platt (Ray) and Mary Alice Smith (Wayne), all of Springfield; five sons, James Abell, Michael Abell (Teresa), and Billy Abell (Rose Marie), all of Springfield, Dr. John Abell of Albany, Ga., and Patrick Abell (Laura) of Louisville; five sisters, Clarine Carrico, Rebecca Carrico (Jimmie), Regina Carrico (Leo) and Fay Smith (Roy), all of Springfield and Sarah Frances Jones (Joseph “Casey”) of Louisville; four brothers, Robert Smith (Beverly) of Campbellsville, Joe Murray Smith (Imelda) of Warner Robbins, Ga., Albertus Smith (Linda) of Cox’s Creek and Bernard Smith (Rosemary) of Louisville; 16 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
The Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at St. Rose Catholic Church with the Rev. John Sica, O.P., officiating. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are grandchildren, David Platt, Jeremy Abell, Katie Sims, Anne Marie Payne, Adam Abell, Brittany Smith and Jennifer Short. The remaining grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2017, at the Carey & Son Funeral Home in Springfield with a 7 p.m. prayer service.
