Thursday, Aug. 24, 2017 — Nelson Fiscal Court voted during a special meeting Thursday morning to leave the county tax rates the same as last year — 14.3 cents per $100 of value.
The unanimous vote followed a public hearing during which no one spoke for or against the proposed tax rate.
The public hearing was required by state law because leaving the tax rate the same as last year will generate approximately $182,000 more revenue than it did last year due to an increase in property assessments.
The additional revenue will be used to fund the general fund and jail operations, as well as capital projects in the next year’s budget, Judge Executive Dean Watts told the magistrates.
The compensating tax rate — the rate that would have generated about the same tax revenue as last year — would have lowered the tax rate from 14.3 to 14.0 cents per $100 of assessed value.
The tax rate will get final approval at the next regular Nelson Fiscal Court meeting, 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017.
