Obituary: Joseph A. ‘A.J.’ Smith Jr., 80, Bardstown

Joseph A. “A.J.” Smith Jr., 80, of Bardstown, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2017, at his residence. He was born in 1937 in Bardstown. He was a self-employed trapper and an Animal Damage Control Agent. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a Kentucky Colonel, a lifetime member of National Rifle Association, a member of the United Trappers Association, National Fur Takers Association, and League of Kentucky Sportsmen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alton J. and Sylvia Smith; one sister, Patsy Taylor; and six brothers, Herter Smith, Donnie Smith, Jerry Smith, Duke Smith, Joe Hagan Smith, and Joe “Ababy” Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Joanna R. Smith of Bardstown; one son, Joseph N. (Ruth) Ryder of Atlanta; three brothers, Eddie (Teresa) Smith of Paducah, Jimmy (Sue) Smith of Thailand, and Fudd (Marie) Smith of Bardstown; one grandson, Nicholas G. Ryder; a special nephew Scott (Laura) Smith of Bardstown; a longtime family friend, Larry Hutchins of Bardstown; and several nieces and nephews.

Cremation was chosen and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may go to Hospice of Nelson County or to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Barlow Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
