Thursday, Sept. 28, 2017, 1 p.m. — Traffic was brisk Thursday morning at the corner of Portland and Pennsylvania avenues as puzzled passers-by slowed to look at a display of commodes outside a Bardstown daycare business owned by former Mayor John Royalty.
Motorists slowed to look at the row of five toilets sitting outside a fenced trash container area with a homemade sign reading “Council seats for sale $40,000” at Little Angels Primary House, 830 Pennsylvania Ave.
The display is an apparent reaction to the Bardstown CIty Council’s action Tuesday night to enter into a settlement agreement with Councilwoman Kecia Copeland. The council voted 4-1 to approve the settlement to avoid litigation regarding how she was treated under the former mayor’s administration.
Royalty’s only comment to the Nelson County Gazette about the display was that it was “political commentary.” The display is on property he owns and not on the city’s right-of-way. He declined further comment on the issue.
