Obituary: Capt. W.G.A. Sympson Jr. USN (ret.), 86, formerly of Bardstown
Capt. William Gobel Anthony Sympson Jr. USN (Ret.), 86, of Roslyn Heights, N.Y., formerly of Bardstown, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017, at his home. He was born June 16, 1931, to W.G.A. and Louise Talbott Sympson in Bardstown, which he always referred to as “home.”
He graduated from Bardstown High School and the U.S. Naval Academy. Among numerous naval positions and honors, he was the Commanding Officer on the USS Vesuvius and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was also the Commander Fleet Activities, Yokosuka, Japan. He received the Third Class of the Order of the Sacred Treasure of the Emperor of Japan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Marjorie Ann McPadden Sympson; one sister, Marie S. Conway; and one son, John W. Sympson.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Walton Sympson; he was the devoted father of his surviving children, Sheilah Sympson (Hideo) Watanabe of Yokohama, Japan, Commander William G.A. (Susan) Sympson III (Ret.) USN of Chesapeake, Va., Col. Thomas S. Sympson, Fort Hood, Texas, and Sean M. Sympson of New York; one sister, Darothy S. Wachs of Lexington; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
The Funeral Mass is 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, 2017, at the Church of St. Mary, Roslyn Harbor, N.Y. with burial with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
Visitation is 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017, at Roslyn Heights Funeral Home, in Roslyn Heights, N.Y. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Mother Theresa’s Order (Missionaries of Charity, 335 E. 145th St., Bronx, NY 10451), or the Church of St. Mary’s Memorial Fund, 110 Bryant Avenue, Roslyn, NY 11576.
