Video’s posting on city police social media page leads to suspect’s arrest

This video — posted on the Bardstown Police Department’s Facebook page on Wednesday morning — led to the arrest of a suspect Thursday morning. The video was viewed more than 19,000 times.

Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017 — The power of social media — and the assistance from local citizens who use it — helped the Bardstown Police Department arrest a man wanted for auto theft, burglary, arson and drug-related charges.

The Bardstown Police Department posted a video Wednesday morning that depicted a man breaking into a vehicle and then setting it on fire overnight Tuesday night. The video received more than 19,000 views and was shared more than 400 times. The video also generated tips and phone calls that led to police arresting Shane David Helm and charging him with theft by unlawful taking – auto; wanton endangerment, first-degree; arson, second-degree; burglary, third-degree; fleeing or evading police, first-degree; operating on a suspended/revoked operators license; reckless driving; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Helm was lodged in the Nelson County Jail.
