Mary Burns, SCN, 88, died Monday, Oct. 30, 2017, at Nazareth Home in Louisville. She enjoyed learning. As a child she dreamed of becoming a teacher, often playing school with her nine siblings. Her education included a focus on English, Philosophy and Physics. She received a Master’s Degree in Mathematics from St. Louis University and a Doctorate in Education from the University of Cincinnati.

Beginning in 1950 she served in education ministries at schools in Covington and Paducah; and Mount Vernon and Dennison, OH. From 1974-2000, she served in ministry at Spalding University in Louisville, as the chair of the Education Department and Dean of the School of Education.  After retiring from Spalding,  she served as a consultant, helping colleges prepare for national certification.

She served her SCN Community as board member of NLBI (Nazareth Literary and Benevolent Institution) and the SCN Committee for Corporate Responsibility, among others.

She is survived by her sister, Charles Mary Burns, SCN; her devoted friend Theresa Beaumont; her many nieces and nephews; and her religious community.
Visitation is 1:30-2:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017, at Nazareth Home in Louisville. The body will be received at 4 p.m. in St. Vincent Church at Nazareth with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m.

The Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 2017, at St. Vincent Church at Nazareth with burial in the Nazareth Cemetery.
