Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017 — A Bethlehem High School Social Justice class is putting their class studies into action with a planned fundraiser to help hurricane victims in Puerto Rico.

The U.S. island possession was recently ravaged by back-to-back hurricanes — Irma and Maria — leaving its 3.4 million inhabitants without power, clean water, or communications. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers estimates it could take nearly a year to restore power completely due to need to ship the supplies from the mainland.

Bethlehem High School senior Anna Hamilton said when her Social Justice class began looking for a project, providing help to the Puerto Rican hurricane victims was an obvious choice. After discussing how to best help the victims, the class decided that donating money was the best option as it would would allow the victims and relief agencies to purchase the most-needed supplies.

VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT. The class is sponsoring a volleyball tournament that will involve the entire school — from freshman to senior classes as well as the faculty.

The first volleyball game will pit the senior class versus the freshman class; the second game will have the sophomores playing the junior class. The winners of those games will play each other, with the winning student team facing off against a team of Bethlehem faculty members.

The winners of the final game will have the opportunity to throw whipped cream pies in the faces of the losing team.

When asked if the school’s faculty members were ready to be “pied,” Hamilton laughed and said “I think they better be!”

WHEN & WHERE. The tournament begins at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017 at Bethlehem High School gym. Admission is $2. Pizza from an array of area pizza vendors will be on sale for $1 per slice. The list of pizza donors include Dominos, Papa Johns, Hometown Pizza and the Springfield Pizza Hut.

Krispy Kreme doughnuts will also be sold as part of the fundraiser. All funds raised will go to help hurricane victims in Puerto Rico through the Catholic Service Appeal, Hamilton said.

Supplies for the tournament’s grand finale — the whipped creme and pie pans for the whipped creme pie throwing — are being donated by IGA in Springfield.

HOW TO HELP. Businesses and individuals interested in helping with the fundraiser for Puerto Rico hurricane victims can contact teacher Katie Kiefer at Bethlehem High School, (502) 348-8594.
