Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017 — The Bardstown Board of Education reviewed Tuesday the strategies that are being developed to support improved academic results at Bardstown Middle School.
Bardstown Middle School principal Dr. Ryan Clark praised the work teachers are already doing at the school and the progress that’s being made.
“There’s some pretty amazing things happening there,” Clark said. “Innovation at the middle school is on fire.”
Clark said the staff is coming up with new and exciting ideas, and as principal, his job is to support the efforts of his staff.
The five goals for the school include:
– developing a growth mindset and environment in school.
– improving the work done by the schools’ Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), and improving collaboration among teachers to monitor and improve student learning.
– improved communication with students, staff and parents.
– provide more opportunities for students to learn and practice leadership.
– focus on improved student performance and providing help to those who need it.
CRUSADE FOR CHILDREN. Lance Boston, the district’s director of special education, reviewed the process of applying for grants from the WHAS Crusade for Children.
Since 1969, the Crusade has given more than $900,000 to local schools that serve students with disabilities. Boston’s presentation to the board reviewed the district’s projects that the Crusade’s grant money helped make possible, which included the preschool indoor playground project completed earlier this year.
Boston said he will be back before the board in December to seek their approval for another Crusade grant application. He thanked the board’s support for grant applications for projects that support the district’s special education students.
In other action, the board:
— approved using capital funds transfer of $420,409 to cover the costs of several expenses, including $265,500 for the softball field renovations; a $26,500 architect fee; newspaper advertising, and printing fees; and payment of interest and principal related to the purchase of school buses. The bus funds will be reimbursed later, Superintendent Brent Holsclaw told the board;
— approved the fiscal year 2017 audit report;
— approved the audited financial report and received a presentation on the report by auditor Jason Strange of Stiles Carter & Associates;
— approved a contract for speech therapy services with Julie Sloan while the district’s regular speech services provider is on leave.
