Obituary: Shirley Shelburne Martin, 87, Bloomfield
Shirley Shelburne Martin, 87, of Bloomfield, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017, at her home. She was born Jan. 4, 1930, in Taylorsville to the late Fred Bodine and Lucille Stone Shelburne. At the age of 6 her family moved to Nelson County and she attended Fairfield Grade School through the 5th grade. The Fairfield School closed and then she attended Cox’s Creek Elementary School in the 6th grade and Bardstown Elementary and High School through the 11th grade. At that time Old Kentucky Home School became a four-year high school and she transferred there and graduated as one of the first graduating seniors from OKHS in 1948. She entered and graduated from the Kentucky Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in 1951. She was a member of the Bloomfield Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
During her nursing career she was employed at Kings Daughter Hospital in Shelbyville, Dr. Charles Spalding, Flaget Memorial Hospital and the Nelson County Health Department as RN and clinical director for 30 years.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Lewis Penn Pulliam and Alex Martin; one sister, Betty Hahn; and two brothers, Jack Shelburne and Joseph Lee Shelburne.
She is survived by three daughters, Jenny Pulliam (Gary Auxier), Beth Pulliam Meador (Bill), and Jackie Drake (Roy); three sons, Lex Martin (Martha), Gregg Martin (Carolyn), and Brad Martin; four sisters, Grace Barnes, Laura Hurst (Harry), Eleanor Wahle (Tommy) and Winnie Berthold; three brothers, Tommy Shelburne (Carole), Tony Shelburne (Shannon), and Alan Shelburne; seven grandchildren, Lauren Elizabeth Drake, Alex Martin III, Daniel Scott Drake, Marybeth Shelburne Meador, Michael Christopher Martin, Taylor Christine Martin, Matthew Garrett Martin; and one great-grandchild, Abigail June Martin.
The funeral is 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, 2017, at the Barlow Funeral Home, 2675 East John Rowan Boulevard with Rev. Leland Parks officiating. Interment will be at the Highview Cemetery.
Visitation is noon to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
