STAFF REPORT
Friday, Dec. 15, 2017 — In the past 30 days, the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) has responded to a number of calls regarding vehicle break-ins and thefts of items from inside those vehicles.
Increases in thefts from vehicles are typical during the Christmas season; however, the growing number of these thefts — including the theft of firearms — is cause for concern.
In the last 30 days, deputies have responded to 26 vehicle break-ins in various locations in the county. Of those reports, five of those vehicles were reported as being unlocked. The thefts appear to be occur between midnight and approximately 6 a.m. Of those vehicles that were broken into, seven firearms were reported stolen — approximately 27% of reported thefts from vehicles.
A sheriff’s office press release issued Friday seeks to make the community aware of the growing number of thefts in the county, particularly the thefts of firearms.
Residents are encouraged to lock their vehicles when they’re unoccupied and remove all valuables — i.e., money, jewelry, firearms, electronics and presents — from vehicles at the end of the day and secure them in their home.
Residents are asked to be observant, and report activity that appears suspicious or unusual to the Nelson County Dispatch non-emergency line, (502) 348-3211, or 911 for emergencies.
