SHERIFF ED MATTINGLY

Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017 — Former Nelson County Sheriff Mike Newton has been appointed to serve the rest of Sheriff Ed Mattingly’s term after Mattingly retires on Jan. 1, 2018.

Judge Executive Dean Watts announced the appointment Wednesday morning through a press release.

Newton will serve through the May primary. At that point, Watts said he has the option of appointing the winning candidate in the May primary as interim sheriff to complete the rest of Mattingly’s term, which runs through December 2018.

Right now, three Democrats are seeking the nomination for sheriff — Kenny Downs, Kaelen Matthews and Ramon Pineiroa.

The deadline to file as a candidate in the May primary is 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2017.
