Obituary: Margaret Hohman, SCN, 95

Margaret Hohman, SCN, 95, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017, at Nazareth Home in Louisville. She was born in Louisville and had been a professed Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 70 years.

She attended Presentation Academy in Louisville and Nazareth College at Nazareth. She spent many years in education ministry, teaching high school in Owensboro, Lexington, and Roanoke, Va. She later became the assistant dean and a professor of chemistry at Spalding College in Louisville.

Social justice and activism were very important to her. As a child, her family’s home was foreclosed on during the Great Depression. This and other experiences helped to shape her lifelong advocacy for the poor and oppressed. She spoke out against racial injustice and other inequalities in society. She served as staff assistant to Mayor Charles Evers of Fayette, Miss. in his unsuccessful bid to become its first African-American governor. While there she had the special task of assisting African-Americans in their effort to vote. In 1977, she became a founding member of NETWORK which is known today as a voice for justice and for the poor. Upon retirement, she continued to serve those in need, including her visits to women in a Louisville jail.

The SCN Community benefited from her involvement in many ways, including as the Director of Pastoral Care at the Motherhouse in Nazareth, KY and as a member of the Office of Global Concerns for the SCN Congregation.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews; and by her religious community.

The Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2017, at St. Vincent Church with burial in the Nazareth Cemetery.

Visitation is 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, 2017, at St. Vincent Church in Nazareth.

Her body will be donated to science for medical research.

Memorial donations in her name may be made to Office of Mission Advancement, P.O. Box 9, Nazareth, KY, 40048.

The Ratterman Funeral Home, 3800 Bardstown Road, Louisville is in charge of arrangements.
